Choice Teachers is looking to appoint a SEN (Special Educational Needs) Teaching Assistant to work in a school in Letchworth.

Our reputable educational institution in Letchworth, Hertfordshire is seeking a dedicated and compassionate SEN (Special Educational Needs) Teaching Assistant to join our team on a full-time basis. As an SEN Teaching Assistant, you will play a crucial role in supporting students with special educational needs, ensuring their academic and personal development.

Job Duties:

  • Provide one-on-one or small group support to students with special educational needs, under the guidance of the SEN Coordinator or class teacher
  • Assist in the implementation of individual education plans (IEPs), including adapting and modifying learning materials to meet the specific needs of students
  • Support students with their academic work, including reading, writing, numeracy, and other subject areas
  • Encourage and promote independent learning and social integration among students
  • Assist with personal care tasks, such as feeding, toileting, and hygiene, for students requiring additional assistance
  • Monitor and record student progress, providing feedback to the class teacher and SEN Coordinator
  • Collaborate with the teaching staff and other professionals to develop and implement strategies to support students’ learning and development
  • Participate in meetings and training sessions to enhance knowledge and skills in supporting students with special educational needs
  • Ensure a safe and inclusive learning environment for all students

Required Qualifications:

  • Valid enhanced DBS (Disclosure and Barring Service) certificate

Education:

A minimum of GCSEs (or equivalent) in English and Mathematics is required.

Experience:

  • Prior experience working with children or young people with special educational needs
  • Experience in supporting individuals with specific learning difficulties, behavioural challenges, or physical disabilities

Knowledge and Skills:

  • Understanding of various special educational needs and the strategies to support them
  • Knowledge of relevant legislation and guidelines related to special educational needs
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills
  • Ability to build rapport and establish positive relationships with students, colleagues, and parents
  • Strong organisational and time management skills
  • Empathy, patience, and resilience in working with students with diverse needs

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Level 3 qualification in Supporting Teaching and Learning in Schools, or equivalent
  • Additional training or qualifications in specific areas of special educational needs support

Working Conditions:

The SEN Teaching Assistant will work in an educational setting, primarily within classrooms. The role may involve assisting students with physical activities and personal care. The work schedule will follow the standard school hours, Monday to Friday, on a full-time basis. The successful candidate may be required to attend occasional meetings or training sessions outside of regular hours.
